Thema:
Osteopathie opnieuw be-grijpen
Talk: osteopathy 2.0 as an osteopathic lesion
Prof. Dr. Jean Marie A.T. Beuckels
DO, BSc. (Hons) Ost.Med., MSc. Ost, Doctor of Medical Science.
Theory and practice will be interlinked and alternated over the duration of the seminar
The construct of the talk:
Theory: dialogue, discussion and conclusions
We will ask ourselves the following questions and of course look for answers...
If we would accept osteopathy as a ‘lesion idea’, what would it change for us and the profession?
How do we define our osteopathy in practice? What are we looking for? Should we medicalize our findings? Is this even possible without losing the core of our job? What is actually the core of our job?
What about old school OMT (osteopathic manual treatment)? Are its concepts still up to date? Maybe we prefer only evidence-based or even simplified symptomatic OMT? What might be our reasons?
Can we still embrace totality in the practice? Are 'cause and effect’ still around?
The talk provides old school ideas and new conceptualisations. We will describe the old school osteopathic ideas in coherence with the Zeitgeist of 1900 and add the necessary information to be able to understand the former ostesophical treatment strategies in the Stillian period. How does the word ‘osteopathy’ fits into this neo-classical conceptual thinking? Are we still osteopathic practitioners?
The lecturer will present some of his latest fundamental and translational research of his department of osteopathic medicine at the university Witten/Herdecke and his department of osteopathy at the HS-Fresenius, University of Applied Sciences in Germany. This fundamental research supports the proposed conceptualization for the course.
